The Society and Stanford University have arranged this distinguished speaker series with talks in San Diego, Los Angeles and Stanford in mid September. Michael Blanding will be our first speaker talking about his well received book, The Map Thief.
Michael is a Boston-based investigative journalist whose work has been published in The Nation, The New Republic, Slate, Salon, Consumers Digest, The Boston Globe Magazine and Boston Magazine. He is currently a senior fellow at the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism at Brandeis University and a staff writer at Harvard Business School. His first book was The Coke Machine, an investigative report on Coca-Cola Michael is also an cartography enthusiast.
The Map Thief is the story of E. Forbes Smiley, a reputable map dealer, who stole rare and valuable maps from institutional collections for resale to his clients. Michael tells the story by combining the history of cartography, insight into the world of rare map dealing and a true crime story. Michael will present in the locations per below. He will speak for 45 minutes and answer questions for another 30 – 45 minutes. There will be no Map Society charge for these events.
