The San Francisco Map & Print Fair - Virtual For 2020

Due to COVID-19 the traditional in-person fair at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts has been canceled until 2021. However, with the advancement and widespread adoption of video conference technology, we are happy to bring the San Francisco Map & Print Fair to you virtually.

Through The Virtual Platform by Collectible Events, Virtual Attendees Will Be Able To…

  • Browse and purchase hundreds of maps and prints from the comfort and safety of you home or office.

  • Connect with dealers via Zoom Video and ask questions about their inventory and collecting in general.

  • Sit in on live presentations by leading map experts from around the world.

  • Watch and listen to pre-recorded and live streamed lectures by members of the California Map Society.

The virtual fair is FREE, but donations to the California Map Society are suggested as they have graciously agreed to open their meeting / lecture series to all attendees and host this new virtual fair. Donate now and reference Collectible Events in the comments section.

The lecture series portion of the San Francisco Map Fair will be sponsored by the California Map Society. It will consist of three 40 minute lectures followed by a 10 minute Q & A period. The mission of the California Map Society to preserve and disseminate historical and contemporary cartography, primarily of California, for members as well as the general public. The society was formed as a statewide association in 1978 and incorporated as a California non-profit public benefit corporation in 1987.

The San Francisco Map Fair is sponsored by the History in Your Hands Foundation (HIYHF), a non-profit organization with a mission to provide classrooms with authentic, historical objects in an effort to help foster a more enriched learning experience.  For more information about the History in Your Hands Foundation, visit our website at www.hiyhf.org

Artist Cal Tabuena-Frolli is following a stint with the Santa Paula Oil Museum with a series of maps and related pieces detailing the history of oil in California, from pre-historic times through 1929. That's when most of us think California oil history begins.

Journalist and sinophile Ed LeFranco will share the various ways the capital of China has been cartographically portrayed throughout the 20th century.

1:30 - 2:10 Jon Jablonski "Resurrecting Landscapes with Machine Vision"

Librarian Jon Jablonski is leveraging collections of aerial photography at UC Santa Barbara and UCLA to build 3-d models of 1930s Yosemite Valley, the Gaviota Coast, and more! By using Agisoft Metashape, the overlapping stereo photographs reveal long-forgotten vistas and have the potential to help find forgotten abandoned oil wells.

Santa Monica's first artist-in-residence at City Yards, Deborah Scacco will highlight how maps, cartography, and the landscape interact in her work as artist and curator.
